Our Story

History of the Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics was established on August 3, 2018, under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Statistics Study Program operates under the Department of Statistics, based on Rector’s Decree No. 1743/UN11/KPT/2018. The Bachelor’s Degree (S1) Program in Statistics was established on August 24, 2012, through the Decree of the Ministry of Education and Culture (KEMENDIKBUD) No. 279/E/O/2012, and welcomed its first cohort of students in 2013.

Currently, the Bachelor’s Degree (S1) Program in Statistics has more than 400 active students, while over 50 of its alumni have pursued careers across various sectors such as industry, corporations, and government institutions as statisticians or in other related fields.

To develop studies and research, and to utilize the results of scientific and applied developments that are relevant, adaptive, and competitive.

To develop areas of interest in statistics and its applications, particularly in the fields of (a) Official Statistics and Public Policy, (b) Business and Industrial Statistics, (c) Computational Statistics, and (d) Biostatistics.

Community Service

To develop community service activities proactively through the dissemination and application of Statistical Science and its practices in accordance with the sustainable needs of society.

To develop mutually beneficial collaborations with various stakeholders, both domestic and international

The Department of Statistics, Universitas Syiah Kuala, has produced highly qualified, competent, and adaptable graduates who are ready to meet the demands of the professional world. The updated learning process has empowered students to excel in their respective fields. In response to future challenges, the Department of Statistics is preparing to establish a Master’s Program in Statistics and Data Science, as a response to the needs and insights gathered systematically from various stakeholders.
